In 2018, Audemars Piguet shocked the world when they presented a prototype – then known as RD#2 – that showcased the world’s thinnest self-winding perpetual calendar. One year later, Audemars Piguet released their Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, a masterclass in horological technical prowess. Its movement, a new caliber 5133, features a perpetual calendar complication and 256 precisely crafted parts, with a width that’s only 2.89mm thick. The watch itself features a slim titanium case and a 950 platinum bezel, still maintaining Audemars Piguet’s signature octagon design measuring 41mm. The fact that they managed to squeeze all these functions in the case, while presenting them in the dial, (including a moon phase, perpetual calendar with day, date, and month, as well as symmetric sub-dials for day/night and leap year indicators at the 8 and 4 o’clock positions respectively), is a feat that still has the watch world in awe.

Established in 1875 by partners Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet, Audemars Piguet is one of the last remaining watchmaking maisons operating under the original founders. The brand has created several technical innovations throughout their existence including the first minute-repeater wristwatch in 1892 and the first skeletonized pocketwatch in 1934. In 1972, Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak designed by Gérald Genta, which was the most expensive stainless-steel luxury sports watch at the time. Since then, the brand has released other iconic models such as the record-breaking Royal Oak Self-Winding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, the world’s thinnest automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch.
