“La Montoya” is a collaboration between master watchmakers Artisans de Geneve and Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya to produce a skeleton version of his favorite watch, the Rolex Daytona. The base Daytona used here is a Ref. 11520, with almost every part of the base watch enhanced. A hundred craftsmen from all over Switzerland worked to make this timepiece truly special, from crafting the Tachymeter bezel in a forged carbon block, redesigning a completely openwork rotor manufactured entirely in 22-carat grey gold, to redesigning the Rolex caliber 4130 movement piece by piece, finishing by hand.
If you look closely at the dial of the Artisans de Genève La Montoya, you’ll notice that the colors of the subdials match the colors flag of Colombia, where racing champion Juan Pablo Montoya is from. Only 50 examples of the stainless steel version were ever made exclusively upon request.
Founded in 2005, Artisans de Genève are considered by many to be the pinnacle of bespoke watch making. Based in Geneva, Artisans de Genève have done high-end modifications on several luxury brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe, and have introduced a variety of special unique pieces based on iconic vintage watches including the Tribute Challenge based on a Rolex Daytona Ref. 6240, and various iterations of the Rolex Daytona Ref. 116520. The workshop has since produced a series of special watch collaborations with important personalities from the world of sports, music and film including the likes of Juan Pablo Montoya, Lenny Kravitz and Spike Lee among others.
