The inspiration behind the Baignoire line began in 1912 when Louis Cartier decided to play around with the traditional round dial shape, stretching it out until it formed the shape of a bathtub (“baignoire in French). This design would continue to evolve until it’s now familiar oblong shape. This piece from 1963 is a great example of this aesthetic, featuring a yellow gold case, painted enamel dial with Roman numerals, and blue hands.

Established in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier after inheriting his mentor’s workshop, Cartier has grown to become one of the most prestigious jewelry manufactures in the world. Cartier’s notable ventures into watchmaking include one of the world’s first modern wristwatches, the Santos de Cartier, the iconic Cartier Tank, and one of the first water-resistant watches ever created, the Cartier Pasha.
