Produced for only two years, Ref. 3713 features the signature “spitfire” dial that is now found on the modern pilot’s watch collection of IWC and is powered by the automatic caliber 79230, a mass-produced chronograph movement that was designed by the independent watchmaker Richard Habring.
The International Watch Company (IWC) was founded in 1868 by American businessman Florentine Ariosto Jones with the idea of combining American engineering concepts with Swiss craftsmanship. Since then, the brand has consistently innovated, beginning with their first pilot’s created in 1936 featuring an anti-magnetic balance and a rotating bezel to the first wristwatch to use a pocket watch movement, the Portuguese, in 1939. Their most complicated model, the Da Vinci Tourbillion Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, was designed by master horologist Kurt Klaus in 1985. Since 2000, the brand has been incorporated as a subsidiary of the Swiss conglomerate, the Richemont Group of Johann Rupert.
